Veterans Day, National World War II Memorial
WWII veteran Garnet Hammond was a participant in a wreath laying ceremony to commemorate Veterans Day at the National World War II Memorial in Washington D.C. on November 11, 2016. Veterans day, observed annually on November 11, is an official U.S. public holiday that honors persons who served in the United States armed forces. A native Washingtonian, Mr. Hammond's military career began in 1942 when he attended Howard University and enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve Officer's Training Corp. As an Army solider, he traveled overseas to England, France, and Germany as part of the European Theater of Operations, taking part in the Battle of the Bulge. Mr. Hammond faithfully served the U.S. Army as a mail clerk until receiving an honorable discharge in 1946. (Photo by Jeff Malet)
