Smithsonian Institution Names Lonnie Bunch III as its first African American Secretary (5/28/2019)
The Smithsonian Institution today named Lonnie Bunch III as its first African American secretary on Tuesday, May 28, 2019, at a press availability at the Smithsonian Castle in Washington D.C. Bunch was the founding director of the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Bunch, a historian, will take over as the 14th secretary of the Smithsonian on June 16, replacing the current secretary David J. Skorton.
