![Capitol Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony : Tuesday, December 8, 2009, 5:00 p.m..
WASHINGTON, Dec. 8 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi, joined by the acting architect of the Capitol, members of the Arizona congressional delegation, the governor of Arizona, and 12-year-old Kaitlyn Ferencik of Surprise, Ariz., lit the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree during a ceremony this evening. This year's tree, a 85-foot blue spruce, came from Arizona's Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest. As part of the Capitol's continuing commitment to save energy, strands of energy-efficient LED lights were used to decorate the tree.
It is tradition that one child from the tree’s state light the Capitol Christmas Tree with the Speaker of the House. Students who submitted ornaments for the outside tree were invited to submit a drawing form along with their ornament. The Capitol Christmas Tree 2009 student winner was Kaitlyn Ferencik from Surprise, Arizona. A seventh grade student at Canyon Ridge School, Kaitlyn traveled to Washington, D.C. with her parents Erika and Troy Ferencik and her teacher Natalie Moore.

![Sledding at the US Capitol : After the first blizzard of December 2009, residents headed to the West Lawn of the Capitol, a super sledding area. The area had been resticted for such activities since 9/11. It lasted for one day before the rules kicked back in and the sledders were frozen out. Senator Dodd, who was kicked off recently when he tried to sled there with his two daughters, persuaded the sergeant-at-arms to lift the ban for the President's Day holiday weekend and the kids in the neighborhood took full advantage.

![Georgetown Hoyas vs Rutgers basketball : The 12th ranked Hoyas made it an easy win on Saturday, Jan 23, 2010 against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. The final score was 88-63. The game was played at the Verizon Center. The Hoyas dominated throughout, shooting 63 percent from the field. Greg Monroe led the scoring with 21 points. He also had 14 rebounds and 6 assists.

![Michelle Obama receives White House Christmas Tree : (11/27/09) The ceremony includes the tree being moved down the road in front of the White House by a horse-drawn carriage and bringing it through the front doors of the White House. The First Lady and her daughters Malia Ann and Sasha greeted the farmers and their families while the tree made its way to the front of the portico.
The Douglas-fir was grown by Eric and Gloria Sundback (standing beside the wagon) of Shepherdstown, W.Va. The Sundbacks have been growers since 1956 (PA), ending up in Shepherdstown WV (1967), and this is their fourth win: twice for President Reagan (Douglas Fir – Fraser Fir) and once for President Carter (Douglas Fir).

During Hanukkah, Jews across the world celebrate the miracle of light that burnt for eight days out of a single-days-worth of oil found in the Temple. One Hanukkah candle is lit the first night, and an additional candle is lit each successive night. The holiday is a celebration of religious freedom and hope.

![Pearl Harbor Day at the Navy Memorial : (12/7/09) The Navy Memorial held a wreathlaying ceremony outside in memoriam of the attacks presided over by Rear Admirals Edward K. “Ted” Walker, Jr. (Ret.) and Patrick Lorge, Commander John Budzik (Ret.) and Mr. John Carl Mindte.
Commander John Budzik, USNR (Ret), joined the Navy in 1939, serving for two years on the USS Ash (YN-2), placing and maintaining anti-submarine and anti-torpedo nets in harbors around the Hawaiian, Midway and New Caledonia islands. Awakened by the first wave of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Budzik quickly went to his ship and was onboard when the second wave of the attack hit. He served throughout the Second World War, commanding the net layer USS Abele (AN-58) during the Iwo Jima
and Okinawa invasions. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his service as commander of Abele during the Okinawa campaign. He retired from the Naval Reserve as a commander with 28 years of service and currently resides at Vinson Hall Retirement Community in McLean, Va.
Mr. John Carl Mindte, son of deceased Pearl Harbor survivor Cdr. Richard Wagoner Mindte, USN (Ret.), is a retired printer who lives in the Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, area. He now gives regular bus tours of the Gettysburg battle site. His father, Commander Mindte, was a communications officer aboard USS Phoenix (CL-46) during the Pearl Harbor attack. He was off duty at the time, playing cribbage. The Navy was the second of four careers for Commander Mindte, who also spent time as a sheepherder in Idaho, a tuna fisherman in Baja, California, and a hand bookbinder who restored antique books and documents for the Library of Congress, the National Museum of the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Naval Academy.
Rear Admiral Edward K. “Ted” Walker Jr., SC, USN (Ret), is President and CEO of the United States Navy Memorial. As a nine-year old boy, the son of a naval officer stationed at Pearl Harbor, Walker witnessed the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

Commander John Budzik, USNR (Ret), joined the Navy in 1939, serving for two years on the USS Ash (YN-2), placing and maintaining anti-submarine and anti-torpedo nets in harbors around the Hawaiian, Midway and New Caledonia islands. Awakened by the first wave of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Budzik quickly went to his ship and was onboard when the second wave of the attack hit. He served throughout the Second World War, commanding the net layer USS Abele (AN-58) during the Iwo Jima
and Okinawa invasions. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his service as commander of Abele during the Okinawa campaign. He retired from the Naval Reserve as a commander with 28 years of service and currently resides at Vinson Hall Retirement Community in McLean, Va.
Mr. John Carl Mindte, son of deceased Pearl Harbor survivor Cdr. Richard Wagoner Mindte, USN (Ret.), is a retired printer who lives in the Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, area. He now gives regular bus tours of the Gettysburg battle site. His father, Commander Mindte, was a communications officer aboard USS Phoenix (CL-46) during the Pearl Harbor attack. He was off duty at the time, playing cribbage. The Navy was the second of four careers for Commander Mindte, who also spent time as a sheepherder in Idaho, a tuna fisherman in Baja, California, and a hand bookbinder who restored antique books and documents for the Library of Congress, the National Museum of the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Naval Academy.
Rear Admiral Edward K. “Ted” Walker Jr., SC, USN (Ret), is President and CEO of the United States Navy Memorial. As a nine-year old boy, the son of a naval officer stationed at Pearl Harbor, Walker witnessed the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

![Michelle Obama receives the new White House Christmas Tree : (11/27/09) The ceremony includes the tree being moved down the road in front of the White House by a horse-drawn carriage and bringing it through the front doors of the White House. The First Lady and her daughters Malia Ann and Sasha greeted the farmers and their families while the tree made its way to the front of the portico.
The Douglas-fir was grown by Eric and Gloria Sundback of Shepherdstown, W.Va. The Sundbacks have been growers since 1956 (PA), ending up in Shepherdstown WV (1967), and this is their fourth win: twice for President Reagan (Douglas Fir – Fraser Fir) and once for President Carter (Douglas Fir).

This year's Help the Homeless Program beneficiaries are 134 nonprofit organizations that work to prevent and end homelessness in the Washington metropolitan area. The program also seeks to build awareness by educating the community, particularly young people, about the issues facing homeless people.

The Federal City Brass Band recreates the sound and appearance of a Union Army regimental brass band of the 1860s. The instruments used by The Federal City Brass Band are originals dating to the mid-19th century, and come from the collections of band members. Sources of the music the band plays include original band journals and sheet music of the Civil War era. The uniforms worn by bandsmen are reproductions based on originals and made from the closest comparable wool and cotton fabrics, in some cases using vegetable dyes and original recipes from 19th century mills. This ceremony recognizes the outstanding work and dedication of all correctional employees and serves to increase the region's awareness of the important role they play in ensuring the safety of our communities. The wreath laying commemorates those correctional employees who lost their lives in the line of duty. This was the 18th year this event has been held. The event took place on May 2, 2009 at the National Law Enforcement Memorial located at 4th and E Street, NW, Judiciary Square Plaza, Washington DC

![Hoyas Basketball vs USF : (Feb 3, 2010) The South Florida Bulls stunned the 7th ranked Hoyas with a 72-64 upset at the Verizon Center. Georgetown actually led by 13 points in the first half. Bulls' Junior guard Dominique Jones led all scorers with 29 points. The Hoyas were led by Greg Monroe and Austin Freeman who had 21 points each, but Monroe was hampered by early foul trouble. No other Hoya scored in double figures. The Hoyas hope to get things back on track on Saturday against 2nd ranked Villanova.

![Georgetown Hoyas vs Villanova basketball : (Verizon Center, Washington DC 2-6-10) 10,000 screaming fans braved blizzard conditions to cheer on as the 7th ranked Georgetown Hoyas cruised to a 103-90 win over the 2nd ranked Villanova Wildcats, handing the visitors only their 2nd loss of the season. The Hoyas stormed to a 23 point lead late in the first half. Villanova fought back to a 10 point deficit with 5 minutes to play but could come no closer. Austin Freeman led all scorers with a cool 25 points. Jason Clark added 24 points which was a career high. Greg Monroe played his usual balanced game with 19 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. The Hoyas converted 56% of their field goal attempts and went 10 for 19 from three point range. The win evens the season series between the two teams at one win each.

The Fighting Irish were without leading scorer Luke Harangody, and the Hoyas did not have a healthy Austin Freeman who was held to only 5 points. The Fighting Irish hit 57.1% of their shots in the game and over 71% in the second half. Greg Monroe was the leading scorer for the Hoyas with 15 points. Ben Hansbrough had a game high of 21 points for the Irish.
