American Flag flies on the east side of the United States Capitol dome in Washington DC on Sept 21, 2010. The custom of flying the flags 24 hours a day over the east and west fronts was begun during World War I. The massive Capitol dome reaches upwards to 288 feet (88 m) in height and was constructed between 1855 and 1866. The bronze Statue of Freedom by Thomas Crawford is the crowning feature of the dome of the United States Capitol. (Photo by Jeff Malet).
