Fracking, Cove Point

Giant puppet representing greedy natural gas interests makes an appearance at an anti-fracking rally near the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C. on July 13, 2014. The People's Puppets are an activist artist group founded at the beginning of Occupy Wall St. They build giant art to help visualize complex narratives of injustice and to help start a public conversation on those issues. Hundreds of environmental activists marched from the Capitol to Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) headquarters to urge FERC to reject a permit for Dominion Resources' proposed LNG export facility at Cove Point, Maryland, 50 miles from the White House on the Chesapeake Bay, claiming it would pose a major threat to the environment. Cove Point is one of about two dozen projects that hope to ship a growing bounty of domestic natural gas to countries in Asia and Europe. (Photo by Jeff Malet)
