Under hostile questioning from Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO), pictured here, and other senators, two former top officials of Arlington National Cemetery acknowledged that they had been aware of problems for years with unmarked and mismarked graves and mishandled remains. The Senate Homeland Security subcommittee hearing took place on Thursday, July 29, 2010 on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. McCaskill, who led the hearing, criticized Metzler for not sounding “an alarm” in 2005 after urns with unidentified cremated remains were found in a cemetery landfill.
“The notion that you come here and act like you didn’t know about this until a month ago is offensive,” McCaskill said. “You did know about it, and you did nothing…you did nothing, and now somebody’s going to come along and clean up this mess, and families have been hurt for no good reason.” (Photo by Jeff Malet)
