Gregory G. Garre speaks to reporters near the steps of Supreme Court on October 10, 2012 in Washington D.C. The Supreme Court had just heard a challenge to its long-standing ruling that race may be considered as a factor in the admissions process (affirmative action). Justices were debating the case of Fisher v. University of Texas. The outcome could have major implications for higher education. As Principal Deputy Solicitor General, Garre became Acting Solicitor General upon the resignation of his predecessor Paul Clement on June 19, 2008. On September 8, 2009, he joined the global law firm Latham & Watkins. (Photo by Jeff Malet)
