Tiffany Mellers, an unemployed Army Reservist, gave a moving speech at a rally held outside the Capitol Building in Washington D.C.on Thursday, July 28, 2011. Mellers said " I thought if I sacrificed for my country, my country would help me. Unfortunately that's not the case. I'm still an unemployed Army Reservist with three mouths to feed .. I had to leave my small children and husband last year .. to go overseas to fight for our country. I sacrificed my time with my family because I believe the American Dream is worth fighting for. If you work hard and play by the rules you can live with dignity, provide for your family and give your kids a better life."
The rally to "Save the American Dream" was organized to tell Democrats to stand strong against Republican debt ceiling proposals that cut Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid while keeping keep tax breaks for millionaires, billionaires and oil companies. Participants included major labor unions such as AFSCME, CWA, AFGE, Teamsters, and various progressive groups such as Move-On, Rebuild the Dream, Jobs with Justice, Gray-Panthers and Code-Pink.
