The APEC 2011 USA Host Committee Launch Reception took place on July 14, the at the Willard Hotel in Washington, D.C. It was the first official event held by the APEC 2011 USA Host Committee, marks the beginning of private sector involvement in the United States' hosting of APEC in 2011. This launch event is an important opportunity to signal that the United States business community stands strongly behind the United States' APEC chairmanship.

A career foreign service officer for nearly forty years, he served as U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Korea and as Ambassador to the Philippines. He held key Washington postings including Philippines desk officer, country director for Japan, and principal deputy assistant secretary for East Asian and Pacific affairs. He was a principal negotiator of the 1994 Agreed Framework aimed at ending North Korea’s nuclear weapons program, and headed the first senior level U.S. government delegation to North Korea.
