Benjamin Drummond, a 24-year-old Black sailor, was the first patient admitted to the Naval Hospital, Washington City (now known as the Old Naval Hospital) when it opened on October 1, 1866. For more information about Drummond, see http://www.oldnavalhospital.org/fpt_main.html
This ceremony took place on February 7, 2009 at the U.S. Navy Memorial & Naval Heritage Center in Washington DC. Vice Admiral Adam M. Robinson, Jr., Surgeon General of the Navy and Chief of the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, was the guest speaker.
