Grave market of Brigadier General Elmer S. Friedberg. While working as an optometrist in 1939, he was so appalled by the news accounts which he read about Hitler's persecution of the Jews that he volunteered to become an Aviation Cadet in what was then the US Army Air Corps. He had received the Distinguished Flying Cross for saving a plane full of comrades after taking action to cut away a bomb that had become lodged on the plane. He was also the recipient of several other medals and citations.
